What ultimately is so compelling about 56 Up is the universality of the experiences. We were all once children. And we all will die. And in between, there is everything else.

We feel good, refreshed and depressed in watching these people get older, also embarrassed in moments and cautioned about the passage of time.

Apted, himself now in his early 70s, says he hopes to continue the series further. Long may it live.

Watching "56 Up" gives you the wonderful feeling of seeing a sociological experiment blossom into something novelistically rich and humane.

Time has been neither kind nor cruel to the 13 men and women profiled in "56 UP." It has just been time, which is what this groundbreaking series is about.

We are all older now, and this series proves it in a most deeply moving way.

What started as a crafty way of looking at the U.K.'s rigid class structure has grown into a portrait of melancholy middle age, with its heartbreaks and minor-key triumphs.

Watching the eighth film is intriguing but, in a way, disappointing. At this point in the game, it feels as if all the characters have determined their lots in life and are simply plodding through their interviews.

Quite simply one of the great documentary projects in the history of cinema, an engrossing sociological experiment on film; and though this mostly mellow installment isn't as revelatory as some earlier ones, it's still a remarkable document.

... feels like a retrospective and summation of the whole series, with ample quotation from the previous films, an approach that makes it interesting even for viewers who haven't seen the previous installments.

A completely unique and remarkable documentary project.

Apted skillfully weaves old footage with the new, and we become poignantly aware of another factor shaping their lives (and our own): biology, as the we watch the once-cute kids grow gray and heavy.

Perhaps the boldest and probably longest running sociological experiment on film.

I think the best thing about this movie (and the entire series) is that it forces the viewer to think about their own lives. It's kind of an awakening experience.

Once again, Apted assembles a captivating documentary that's profoundly educational, essential viewing to aid the understanding of the human experience.

"56 Up" is well worth seeing.

56 Up is still moving and philosophic, though not as exciting as earlier episodes, which had more drama.

The running time is over two hours, but the lives here are richly revealed and vastly rewarding.

Exclusive: Johnson Controls might sell auto interiors unit - sources

NEW YORK/DETROIT (Reuters) - Johnson Controls Inc is exploring a potential sale of its automotive interiors unit, a move that would allow the diversified manufacturer to focus on higher-margin building controls and next-generation car batteries, three people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

Shares of Johnson Controls were up about 6 percent to $33.74 on the New York Stock Exchange, valuing the diversified conglomerate at around $23 billion.

Johnson Controls, the largest U.S. auto supplier with sales of more than $4 billion in car interiors for fiscal 2012, has grappled with industry-wide pressure on margins, low vehicle production in Europe and increased competition from China.

A successful sale of the interiors division, which competes with rivals such as Magna International Inc and Faurecia , would leave Johnson Controls with three other major business: automotive seating, building controls and car batteries.

The company also joins a growing number of diversified conglomerates looking to exit businesses that generate poor returns or do not fit with their core operations.

The Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based company is being advised by investment bank JPMorgan Chase on the potential interiors divestiture, two of the people said, asking not to be named because the discussions are private.

Johnson Controls posted revenue of $42 billion its last fiscal year. Automotive seating remains its largest segment with roughly $16 billion in sales for its fiscal 2012 that ended in September.

Johnson Controls and JPMorgan declined to comment.

In October, Johnson Controls separated its car seating from its interiors and electronics businesses, saying that economic and competitive characteristics between seating, interiors and electronics are "increasingly different."

"If you look at those businesses, the business models, capital intensity, the manufacturing footprint requirements are very, very different. And we also wanted to bring more focus to each of those segments," Chief Executive Steve Roell said at that time.

The diversified manufacturer, along with the rest of the industry, has been battling to improve poor margins in car interiors over the past few years. Visteon Corp is also trying to exit its auto interiors business.

The company's fiscal 2013 year outlook called for electronics and interiors business margins of between 1.9 percent and 2.1 percent, and its mid-term outlook through 2017 called for those margins to rise to 6 percent to 7 percent.

In comparison, Johnson Controls' power solutions business - the world's largest provider of advanced batteries for vehicles - expects margins between 14.6 percent to 14.8 percent in its 2013 fiscal year and improvement in margins by 2 percentage points in its outlook to 2017.

Its building efficiency business expects 2013 margins of 6.4 percent to 6.5 percent.

Facebook may charge users to remove ads, patent application reveals

Don?t like those contextual ads displayed next to your Facebook profile? Would?you pay Facebook a monthly fee to get rid of them?

A patent application that Facebook filed in mid-2011 and that finally got published at the end of January?suggests that the company may be willing to give up on ad space and offer users more flexibility with regards to the look of their profiles in exchange for cash.

Patent application 20130030987?is tellingly titled ?Paid Profile Personalization,? and its description doesn?t exactly beat around the bush either:

?The user may select one or more social networking objects to replace advertisements or other elements that are normally displayed to visitors of the user?s profile page that are otherwise controlled by the social networking system. In particular embodiments, the user may edit elements on their profile page that are otherwise automatically generated and controlled in design and content by the social networking system. In particular embodiments, the user is billed on a recurring basis for profile personalization.?

The patent application lists CEO Mark Zuckerberg himself as well as Facebook Ads Product Director Gokul Rajaram and former Facebook Product Management Director Prashant Fuloria as inventors.

It doesn?t actually mention Facebook by name, and instead just refers to general social networking functionality ? but both the language of the application and the accompanying drawings make it clear that this could one day very much become a Facebook monetization strategy.

Facebook, one has to remember, was seen as the anti-Myspace when it launched in 2004. Myspace gave users so many options to customize almost everything on their profiles to the point where many profiles made your eyes hurt. Facebook, on the other hand, tightly controlled the look of its profile pages with a unified layout across the entire site.

Now it may be willing to give up some of that control. One example specifically mentioned in the patent application is about those contextual ads on the right side of your timeline. Users could replace them with pictures of their car or other ?favorite memories.?

Another example would allow users to get rid of the small about section that Facebook currently places under a user?s profile picture. Users would be offered the option to replace information like their hometown, gender and relationship status with a personalized status message.

?For example, after receiving a large number of comments or ?likes? on a particular status message, the user may receive a dialog box prompting the user with the text: ?Would you like to personalize your profile with this status message for 10 credits a month???

Even the list of people displayed as your friends may be up for grabs:

?For example, the user may select his closest friends for display, or his most attractive female friends as a method of self-promotion.?

Personalized profiles could be an interesting revenue opportunity for Facebook.

To be fair, the existence of a patent application alone doesn?t necessarily mean that Facebook will actually follow through on these plans. However, Facebook has been under significant pressure by Wall Street to increase monetization ? and efforts to do this through ads and sponsored messages have led to some backlash.

Earlier this week, New York Times blogger Nick Bilton suggested that the social network was displaying fewer of his posts to his followers in an effort to make paid posts more appealing. Facebook strongly rejected this suggestion ? but it still goes to show how suspicious many Facebook users are of ads and promoted posts on the site. Giving these users a way to opt out of some of the advertising could be a smart move ? and at the same time open up new revenue streams to Facebook.

The patent application for paid profile personalization suggests as much, stating:

?Permitting such functionality improves the overall user experience while maximizing revenue to the social networking system.?

Facebook didn?t immediately respond to a request for comment for this post.

A new study of Central African forest elephants has found their numbers down by 62 percent between 2002 and 2011. The study comes as governments and conservationists meet in Thailand to amend the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

African forest elephants have been in trouble for a while, but only now have scientists figured out that more than half of them have died over the past decade. It took hundreds of researchers nine years, walking literally thousands of miles, counting piles of elephant dung as well as elephant carcasses stripped of their ivory tusks, to realize that the majority of the dead had been shot.

"We can see from seizures of ivory, and we can see from the number of carcasses that are starting to lie around in the forest, that elephants are in deeper and deeper trouble," said Fiona Maisels, who was part of the team that published these findings in the latest issue of the journal PLOS.

There's always been ivory poaching in Africa, but after a ban in 1989, the trade diminished. Now, however, the numbers have exploded. Some 25,000 African elephants are being killed every year, many of them being forest elephants living in the heart of Africa.

Organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the research project found that the closer people, roads and villages are to elephants, the more animals die. The researchers used geographic information systems to correlate these factors to the numbers of killed elephants. They also discovered the "corruption to dung" ration.

"The more corrupt the country," Maisels says, "the less dung there is." That's government corruption, meaning officials who overlook or even participate in the illegal trade.

But the biggest contributor to the uptick in elephant killing is a huge spike in demand for ivory in China, where new wealth means more people can buy ivory. "And this [is] mainly to do with the fact that there is a very big middle to wealthy class in China now," Maisels says.

Chinese collectors covet ivory for figurines, chopsticks and trinkets. China is by no means the only market, but wildlife experts say China consumes half the supply. A growing population of Chinese workers in Africa makes the trade that much easier. As a result, the price of ivory has shot up tenfold over the past five to seven years.

The Chinese government has promised to discuss measures to curb the trade at the CITES meeting this week. But Maisels, who teaches wildlife biology at the University of Stirling in Scotland, says education is most important.

"Chinese students come up to me and say, 'Wow, you know, what can we do? We had no idea,' " she says. "That's the story that's put out, [that] they're anesthetized, the tusks are taken out, and they're patted on the bottom and sent out to grow a new set."

Biologist Richard Ruggiero at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has spent 30 years working with elephants in central Africa. He says the numerical death count is bad enough, but he believes this is an animal that is somehow aware that something terrible is happening to it.

"Behind the numbers is a real tragedy of a very sentient creature, who really knows that there's a genocide going on," Ruggiero says. "They understand the concept of mortality. They show signs of mourning dead. They understand what tusks mean. They'll pick them up from a carcass."

Ruggiero says it's not just an African or Chinese problem. It requires everyone to take notice to halt the lucrative trade.

"Hopefully people will see the big picture," he says, "will see the aesthetics that elephants cannot and should not be reduced to numbers in a balance book of a business that trades in their teeth."

'Space Invader' Galaxy Captured by Hubble Telescope (Photos)

Anyone who played the classic 1970s computer game "Space Invaders" may recognize the titular aliens in the form of a strange-looking distant galaxy spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The galaxy's image has been stretched and mirrored to look like an alien by a cosmic effect called gravitational lensing, scientists said in an image announcement today (March 5). Very massive objects, such as clusters of galaxies, can deform space-time itself, so that light passing through it travels a curved path and produces a distorted image. The phenomenon is called lensing because it often magnifies the images of distant objects that would otherwise be too small and faint to be visible.

That's just what happened with a faraway elliptical galaxy that lies billions of light-years from Earth. When its light passed near the massive Abell 68 galaxy cluster, the light was bent and warped, producing a picture resembling a squat alien invader when viewed from Earth.

Scientists released a video of the "space invader" Hubble view, in addition to the amazing new images.

Gravitational lensing is a powerful tool for astronomy, letting scientists boost the already formidable magnifying powers of their best telescopes, such as Hubble, to glimpse some of the most distant and faint objects in the universe.

"These distorted images of distant galaxies are a particularly fine example of this phenomenon," Hubble officials said in a statement. "In the middle of the image are a large number of galaxies stretched out into almost straight streaks of light that look like shooting stars."

The image was captured in infrared light by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, combined with near-infrared data taken by the telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys.?

The Hubble Space Telescope launched in April 1990 and is still going strong, after having been repaired and upgraded by visiting space shuttle missions five times. The observatory could continue to operate through at least 2018, officials have said, when its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, is due to launch.

Welsh-born Burton, who died in 1984, received the career honor as part of the 50th anniversary of ancient Egypt movie drama "Cleopatra," in which he and co-star Taylor began their storied and tumultuous love affair.

The couple's adopted daughter, Maria Burton, accepted the honor of the iconic terrazzo and brass star along Hollywood Boulevard in the historical heart of the U.S. film industry.

Burton was nominated for an Oscar seven times between 1953 and 1978 but never won the prize.

Actor and fellow Welshman Michael Sheen spoke at the unveiling and recalled the awe he felt when Burton and Taylor, one of Hollywood's most famous couples, visited the village where Sheen grew up.

"The same beach that I built my boyhood sand castles (on) and learned to failingly swim - it was that same beach, that one legendary day, Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor descended from the heavens, like gods from Olympus, in a helicopter ... and landed on those sands," Sheen said.

"They stepped out swathed in luxurious fur coats - it was the '70s - and walked among us for too short a time," he added.

Burton, whose star is the 2,941th installed, starred in 11 films with Taylor, including "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" in 1966 and "The Taming of the Shrew" in 1967.

The couple's scandalous love affair during 1964's "Cleopatra" was made into a U.S. television movie "Liz & Dick," starring Lindsay Lohan, last year.

Burton and Taylor wed for the first time in 1964 and divorced in 1974. They remarried the following year, but that marriage lasted just nine months.

Burton, who was born Richard Jenkins, was married five times and died in 1984 from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 58. Taylor, who married eight times, died in 2011 at age 79.

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? The first in a chain of Polaroid-branded photo shops opened here Friday, with its backers hoping to reinvigorate the digital world's interest in printed images by capitalizing on an iconic name.

Polaroid Fotobar aims to tap into unprecedented interest in photography with its inaugural 2,000-square-foot store. The trick will be to coax consumers who snap pictures on cellphones and other devices to give their memories new life on paper.

"Maybe it's on a smartphone, maybe it's on Instagram, maybe it's on Facebook," said Warren Struhl, the founder and CEO of Fotobar. "But digital is not permanent. Physical is permanent."

In the glistening new store, customers can pay a visit to the bar where "fototenders" will assist in wireless uploads of photos. From there, a visitor can purchase prints made on-site, or order products sporting their images on canvas, metal, bamboo and other materials.

The cheapest item is a $1 print replicating a traditional Polaroid, though the purchase requires a minimum of six. The priciest product is a 7-foot-by-4-foot, 150-pound slab of acrylic with a customer's image on it, running $2,500. All of the prints made on-site take the form of the original Polaroid, in varying sizes, with its familiar white border. It is thicker, at 1.2 millimeters, and sturdier, but is instantly recognizable.

Struhl says he has heard time and again that photography's transition to digital has brought "a pain point" for people, who feel a sense of guilt that their images may reside on a hard drive but not in a frame.

"It makes them sad," he contends. "Most people are afraid they're going to lose that favorite picture on top of the fact that they wish it was up on a shelf."

Whether that is true, and whether it drives people into Struhl's stores will determine the fate of the Fotobar. But even some with deep nostalgia for the Polaroid brand wonder how the business will fare in a digital world.

Phillip Block of the International Center of Photography said he grew up with Polaroids and is "thrilled that anyone is interested in picturemaking and the physical print." But he said digital cameras have replicated the immediate gratification and emotional impact people experienced when their Polaroid camera spit out a floppy print.

Polaroid cameras were the ultimate in convenience, he said, and "anything other than that is a step backwards."

But as customers began to file in, there was no sign of discontent. Among the first to take a seat at the Fotobar was Jami Bloch, 12, who was uploading photos from her Facebook and Instagram accounts. She frequently takes photos on her iPhone but never has them printed.

"You can actually like see them," she said of the prints, "it's actually like real."

Besides offering a sleek, sparkling white atmosphere, the store also has a studio that will offer free classes, host parties and allow customers to come in for portraits with local photographers. Struhl says he's negotiating at least 10 leases for other Fotobar sites and expects new locations may open elsewhere in Florida, in New York, Boston and Las Vegas, in the next year.

Customers can also find refurbished Polaroid cameras selling for $159.95 and eight-packs of film for $29.95.

Polaroid itself, which pioneered instant photography, ultimately went bankrupt and doesn't produce its iconic cameras or film anymore. Film compatible with old Polaroid cameras is now manufactured by The Impossible Project. Polaroid is paid for the use of its name on the stores through a licensing agreement. Fotobar is owned by Struhl and other investors.

Fotobar faces competition from chain drugstores and other retail sites that allow customers to print their digital pictures, not to mention an array of websites that will deliver prints without someone ever having to leave their computer.

Struhl insists Fotobar is different, though.

"Four-by-six prints are available lots of places," he said. "We're the only place that makes Polaroids."

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Tradition-rich UCLA and Louisville are taking on an unconventional look for college basketball's postseason: sleeves.

Adidas unveiled its new brightly colored, camouflage-patterned uniforms for six men's teams Thursday. Kansas, Notre Dame and Cincinnati will also sport the multihued shorts but will stick with sleeveless jerseys. Baylor will join the Bruins and Cardinals in wearing the short-sleeved top, which the company debuted with the NBA's Golden State Warriors earlier this month.

Alternate uniforms have become big business in college sports, from Oregon's fluorescent tones with Nike to Maryland's loud designs with Under Armour.

No. 6 Kansas, No. 10 Louisville and No. 21 Notre Dame are currently ranked in the AP Top 25. UCLA, Cincinnati and Baylor might need a few more wins to guarantee they'll be playing in the NCAA tournament.

The second-ranked Notre Dame women and No. 16 Louisville will also wear the gear.

The teams will start using the uniforms for conference tournaments.

New way to keep PCs cool: Submerge them in goo

The scourge of the hot computer isn't limited to lap-scalding notebooks. The enormous datacenters used by the likes of Facebook and Google generate immense amounts of heat and cost a fortune in air conditioning. But there's a new option: Dip the whole computer in heat-dissipating goo.

Most computers these days are air-cooled with fans. (You can often hear one spinning up if your computer is working hard on a task.)

Higher-end computers such as custom gaming rigs may resort to water cooling, which uses cool water in copper pipes to absorb and whisk away more heat than air alone. Even exotic materials like liquid nitrogen or hydrogen can be used in extreme circumstances.

But those aren't suitable for applying to the thousands of servers in a Facebook datacenter. Unfortunately, the most common solution seems to be huge air-conditioning and venting systems, along with using naturally cool locations ? a solution that could have ecological implications.

A company called Iceotope has what it thinks is the best of both worlds: putting the whole server "blade" (the individual hardware component of a server "farm") inside a container full of a special liquid called Novec. Made by 3M, it's specially engineered to dissipate heat, doing so 20 times faster than water ? and 1,000 times faster than air.

But the key is that Novec doesn't conduct electricity at all, meaning that a computer or any electronic device can sit in it and run, happy as a clam. The researchers who came up with the technique demonstrate the benefits of Novec this in the following video, which shows mobile phones being dunked and functioning perfectly well:

The server works at high capacity and produces lots of heat, which spreads out quickly through the Novec bath. The module's enclosure is made of aluminum, which also conducts heat well, outside of which is an array of running pipes, filled with cool water. This fast-moving water draws out the heat and then gets promptly pumped out.

As a result, the cost of keeping the datacenters cool is massively reduced (and they're quieter, to boot). A "rack" of servers might take several kilowatts of power for its fans and venting, but Iceotope's use only a small fraction of that ? 80 watts or less. And the outgoing water is easier to handle than hot air and could even be used for purposes such as residential heating.

The first to deploy the system is the University of Leeds, which helped test and develop the server modules. They'll be using it to run engineering students' computer models ? and routing the warmed water through radiators to heat the lab.

This sort of system is great for Google and its big-data ilk, but what about consumers? For now, the system is too specialized for use in laptops, or for that matter smartphones, which occasionally also get hot to the touch. It's not out of the question, but this magic liquid will probably take some time to trickle down, so to speak, to ordinary users.

New fabrication technique could provide breakthrough for solar energy systems

Feb. 27, 2013 ? A novel fabrication technique developed by UConn engineering professor Brian Willis could provide the breakthrough technology scientists have been looking for to vastly improve today's solar energy systems.

For years, scientists have studied the potential benefits of a new branch of solar energy technology that relies on incredibly small nanosized antenna arrays that are theoretically capable of harvesting more than 70 percent of the sun's electromagnetic radiation and simultaneously converting it into usable electric power.

The technology would be a vast improvement over the silicon solar panels in widespread use today. Even the best silicon panels collect only about 20 percent of available solar radiation, and separate mechanisms are needed to convert the stored energy to usable electricity for the commercial power grid. The panels' limited efficiency and expensive development costs have been two of the biggest barriers to the widespread adoption of solar power as a practical replacement for traditional fossil fuels.

But while nanosized antennas have shown promise in theory, scientists have lacked the technology required to construct and test them. The fabrication process is immensely challenging. The nano-antennas -- known as "rectennas" because of their ability to both absorb and rectify solar energy from alternating current to direct current -- must be capable of operating at the speed of visible light and be built in such a way that their core pair of electrodes is a mere 1 or 2 nanometers apart, a distance of approximately one millionth of a millimeter, or 30,000 times smaller than the diameter of human hair.

The potential breakthrough lies in a novel fabrication process called selective area atomic layer deposition (ALD) that was developed by Willis, an associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the previous director of UConn's Chemical Engineering Program. Willis joined UConn in 2008 as part of an eminent faculty hiring initiative that brought an elite team of leaders in sustainable energy technology to the University. Willis developed the ALD process while teaching at the University of Delaware, and patented the technique in 2011.?

It is through atomic layer deposition that scientists can finally fabricate a working rectenna device. In a rectenna device, one of the two interior electrodes must have a sharp tip, similar to the point of a triangle. The secret is getting the tip of that electrode within one or two nanometers of the opposite electrode, something similar to holding the point of a needle to the plane of a wall. Before the advent of ALD, existing lithographic fabrication techniques had been unable to create such a small space within a working electrical diode. Using sophisticated electronic equipment such as electron guns, the closest scientists could get was about 10 times the required separation. Through atomic layer deposition, Willis has shown he is able to precisely coat the tip of the rectenna with layers of individual copper atoms until a gap of about 1.5 nanometers is achieved. The process is self-limiting and stops at 1.5 nanometer separation.

The size of the gap is critical because it creates an ultra-fast tunnel junction between the rectenna's two electrodes, allowing a maximum transfer of electricity. The nanosized gap gives energized electrons on the rectenna just enough time to tunnel to the opposite electrode before their electrical current reverses and they try to go back. The triangular tip of the rectenna makes it hard for the electrons to reverse direction, thus capturing the energy and rectifying it to a unidirectional current.

Impressively, the rectennas, because of their incredibly small and fast tunnel diodes, are capable of converting solar radiation in the infrared region through the extremely fast and short wavelengths of visible light -- something that has never been accomplished before. Silicon solar panels, by comparison, have a single band gap which, loosely speaking, allows the panel to convert electromagnetic radiation efficiently at only one small portion of the solar spectrum. The rectenna devices don't rely on a band gap and may be tuned to harvest light over the whole solar spectrum, creating maximum efficiency.

The federal government has taken notice of Willis's work. Willis and a team of scientists from Penn State Altoona along with SciTech Associates Holdings Inc., a private research and development company based in State College, Pa., recently received a $650,000, three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to fabricate rectennas and search for ways to maximize their performance.

"This new technology could get us over the hump and make solar energy cost-competitive with fossil fuels," says Willis. "This is brand new technology, a whole new train of thought."

The Penn State Altoona research team -- which has been exploring the theoretical side of rectennas for more than a decade -- is led by physics professor Darin Zimmerman, with fellow physics professors Gary Weisel and Brock Weiss serving as co-investigators. The collaboration also includes Penn State emeritus physics professors Paul Cutler and Nicholas Miskovsky, who are principal members of Scitech Associates.

"The solar power conversion device under development by this collaboration of two universities and an industry subcontractor has the potential to revolutionize green solar power technology by increasing efficiencies, reducing costs, and providing new economic opportunities," Zimmerman says.

"Until the advent of selective atomic layer deposition (ALD), it has not been possible to fabricate practical and reproducible rectenna arrays that can harness solar energy from the infrared through the visible," says Zimmerman. "ALD is a vitally important processing step, making the creation of these devices possible. Ultimately, the fabrication, characterization, and modeling of the proposed rectenna arrays will lead to increased understanding of the physical processes underlying these devices, with the promise of greatly increasing the efficiency of solar power conversion technology."

The atomic layer deposition process is favored by science and industry because it is simple, easily reproducible, and scalable for mass production. Willis says the chemical process is already used by companies such as Intel for microelectronics, and is particularly applicable for precise, homogenous coatings for nanostructures, nanowires, nanotubes, and for use in the next generation of high-performing semi-conductors and transistors.

Willis says the method being used to fabricate rectennas also can be applied to other areas, including enhancing current photovoltaics (the conversion of photo energy to electrical energy), thermoelectrics, infrared sensing and imaging, and chemical sensors.

A 2011 seed grant from UConn's Center for Clean Energy Engineering allowed Willis to fabricate a prototype rectenna and gather preliminary data using ALD that was instrumental in securing the NSF grant, Willis says.

Over the next year, Willis and his collaborators in Pennsylvania plan to build prototype rectennas and begin testing their efficiency. Willis compares the process to tuning in a station on a radio.

"We've already made a first version of the device," says Willis. "Now we're looking for ways to modify the rectenna so it tunes into frequencies better. I compare it to the days when televisions relied on rabbit ear antennas for reception. Everything was a static blur until you moved the antenna around and saw the ghost of an image. Then you kept moving it around until the image was clearer. That's what we're looking for, that ghost of an image. Once we have that, we can work on making it more robust and repeatable."

Willis says finding that magic point where a rectenna picks up maximum solar energy and rectifies it into electrical power will be the champagne-popping, "ah-ha" moment of the project.

"To capture the visible light frequencies, the rectenna have to get smaller than anything we've ever made before, so we're really pushing the limits of what we can do," says Willis. "And the tunnel junctions have to operate at the speed of visible light, so we're pushing down to these really high speeds to the point where the question becomes 'Can these devices really function at this level?' Theoretically we know it is possible, but we won't know for sure until we make and test this device."

Halt in detainee releases spurs reactions on immigration debate

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) released several hundred immigrant detainees who posed no risk due to looming budget cuts, but halted the releases, saying this could change depending on the outcome of the budget sequester. The releases ? and then the halt on the releases ? has generated strong reaction from different sides on issues of immigration and enforcement.

?The looming budget cuts are forcing ICE to do what it should have been doing already ? prioritizing resources to focus on real threats,? said National Immigration Forum spokesperson Katherine Vargas. ?The National Immigration Forum has long cited the high costs of detaining a low-risk immigrant as one of the reasons to limit ICE detention programs. In an August 2012 report called ?The Math of Immigration Detention,? the organization said that taxpayers could save $1.6 billion a year ? an 80 percent reduction in current costs ? if only individuals convicted of serious crimes were detained and less expensive monitoring efforts were used, which was what ICE did when the detainees were released.

But the detainees? releases elicited strong reactions from some lawmakers. ?Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Lou Barletta said ? and posted on his website:??We learned today that the Obama Administration summarily released untold numbers of inmates ? this?reminds me of Fidel Castro?s release of criminals in the Mariel Boatlift in 1980.? Barletta also added, ?if this is the best cost-savings that Secretary Napolitano can do, then we have to begin to seriously question her judgment.? ?Administration officials have said the release of detainees for budget reasons was a decision made by ICE and it did not involve the White House.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer?s spokesperson Matthew Benson said the detainees? release was a ?bad sign? for the Administration?s commitment to immigration reform and security, according to an article in the Arizona Republic.

?If their first step was to start releasing into the community criminal aliens, that doesn?t suggest they have a real high commitment to public safety and continued immigration enforcement,? said Benson, adding, ?Hundreds or thousands of criminal aliens are being released into these communities. We don?t know anything about their criminal profiles, the manner in which they?re being supervised or where they?re being released to,? said Governor Brewer?s spokesperson.

The approximately 300 immigrants who were released had no serious criminal records and are being monitored after their release, according to ICE.

In response to the remarks from Governor Brewer?s office, ?Promise Arizona?s Petra Falc?n says that apart from the high costs of detaining immigrants with no serious criminal record, there is also the human cost of detention ? and the benefits to releasing some immigrant detainees.

?It is always a good idea to bring our families together, especially when people are in detention over a broken tail light or because they were lacking some documents,? says Falc?n. ??Many of these detainees have been working here for years in hotels or in landscaping, raising families, and have connections and even long-term jobs,? she adds. ??I think in these cases there should be prosecutorial discretion, but they are still being detained in Arizona,? says Falc?n.

?As some people are being released, others are being detained?a never-ending cycle,? said Carolina Canizalez, from United We Dream.

On the legislative side, bipartisan groups in the House and Senate say they are making progress on proposals on immigration reform.
